Q: What are the tax implications for a non-profit organization?
A: 501c3 organizations have the ability to generate revenue in a variety of different ways. Most ways are listed on page 10 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1023.pdf. The Non-Profit status requires certain rules as to how an organization will distribute these funds, but there are not restrictions or limitations to our knowledge on how revenues can be generated. The simplest example would be a Bake Sale. These are sales, not donations, done to raise money. Any and all revenue generated by your organization is essentially tax free because of your 501c3 status. As long as your organization is properly reporting its revenues, expenses, etc. and directing the use of its funds in the proper manner, then your tax exempt status continues in perpetuity regardless of how many different types of revenue your organization has received.
